Web3 is not just a buzzword or a futuristic concept – it’s already here, transforming our digital world and bringing forward new opportunities for technology and user experiences. The potential of Web3 to radically transform our internet experience, particularly how our personal data is used, cannot be overstated. But what are the real-world use cases of Web3 and how might it shape our lives in the coming years? Let’s explore a few key areas.

1. Decentralized Control and Access

Web3 is about decentralizing control and access. In contrast to Web2, where large tech corporations dominate and own the content users create, Web3 allows content creators to maintain ownership over their content, and much of what accompanies it, such as revenue and data. In this way, permissionless blockchains power the Web3 internet. Instead of relying on accounts provided by corporations, Web3 relies on non-custodial accounts called crypto wallets. Through these gateways that unlock blockchain access, users get to control their assets and deploy them where they see fit.

2. The Metaverse

The Metaverse is another key area of Web3 development. Often associated with virtual reality (VR) immersion, the Metaverse is actually a broader concept. In Web3, the internet evolves into a seamlessly connected virtual place that links multiple networks into a meta-network. Here are some practical implications of this concept:

  • Having an account, or a digital wallet, that accesses blockchain-powered networks for online shopping, entertainment, social media, concerts, gaming, e-commerce, and more.
  • Possessing digital currency or NFTs in a digital wallet for use within these platforms.
  • Utilizing devices that are platform-agnostic, whether that’s a gaming console, smartphone, or PC.
  • Leveraging digital currency to secure proof-of-stake blockchains like Ethereum or Avalanche, while receiving monetary yields in return.

Importantly, the 3D element of VR is not a necessity for the Metaverse, nor is it likely to be centralized. The Metaverse will probably be composed of general-purpose platforms that can integrate into other networks. For instance, one could create a virtual space in open-source Decentraland for a business meeting, education, or e-commerce. Users can join the space with their wallets, with or without VR.

The possibilities are endless, but the above examples illustrate just a glimpse into the potential future. The shift from Web2 to Web3 signifies a move towards a more user-centric, decentralized, and interactive internet, which will undoubtedly impact all aspects of our lives.
